Welcome to the first edition of
ACKNEX MAGAZINE
Level Designers!
The times are hard for them these days. Especially newcomers not coming
from among the programmers have a rough time holding up their own in the
jungle of world kits. In all the world there is only one really freely
available software allowing you to build really professional real time
worlds. I am talking about the ACKNEX engine (hardly a suprise to readers
of this magazine) - a toolkit marketed by the producer Conitec together
with a comprehensible script language and an editor under the sweet sounding
name of "3D GameStudio".
In order to further the exchange of experience among ACKNEX users we have
decided to create a periodical in the internet which is also meant to give
non-programmers the needed support. We - that is not the marketing departement
of Conitec, but a group of motivated ACKNEX developers. We are supported
and advised by Conitec, but are ourselves responsible for the contents
of this magazine. Which means that you won't get to read any sweet-mouthed
advertising longcopy in this magazine, but will read about the shortcomings
of the software (and there are some!). This only to prevent anybody from
thinking that AUM might be some kind of Philipp Morris Magazine, only for
soft- instead of smokeware.
The people behind this magazine are the same who wrote the first book about
ACKNEX: Reinhard Wissdorf (Editor)and Johann C. Lotter (Advisor). But we
do hope to get as many readers and users as possible to contribute to this
magazine.
About this edition
As this is a first edition, none of the columns bears greater importance.
Just that much about this edition: We'll start the column "Games" with
the game "ANGST", which currently may be called the most widely distributed
release of an ACKNEX game. At the same time we present an interview with
Andreas Vahsen, developer of ANGST, in our column "Interview".
Valuable Hints
you will get in our column "Hints", in this issue there is an easy
to grasp and not to be misunderstood instruction on how to start the engine
(hard to believe how many users don't even know any more what a DOS window
is) and for advanced readers a quick lesson on "Rotating Regions". But
now don't let me keep you from clicking on the buttons any longer, as the
screenshot of the month is waiting for you as well as the new designer
contest under "Contest". Here you may also download the winner of the last
one.
So have fun with this edition
